Guzmanias – unusual, stunning and great for indoor ‘Wow’ factor!
Guzmania are excellent indoor & office desk plants. The long, narrow shiny leaves rise from a deep central cup and end in a vivid, showy flower that lasts for many weeks with minimal effort! Definitely worth trying…
Guzmania are part of the bromeliad family and may be classified as epiphytes (air plants), as they can be grown without soil. They occur naturally in tropical regions where they grow both in the soil and on top of other forest dwelling plants.
Grown as indoor plants, Guzmania have been found to have air-purifying properties. They typically only flower once if grown indoors and will produce off-shoots that grow and flower.
Traditionally mainy orange in colour, Guzmania are now available in a wide range of colours including yellows, purples, reds and oranges.
Basic growing guidelines:
Guzmania require low light and should be kept out of direct sunlight
Watering is simple. As with all bromeliads the central cup needs to be kept filled with water. Be sure to replace the water frequently to keep it fresh. The soil should also be kept moist.
Bromeliads require no pest and disease control. A monthly addition of liquid fertilizer to the water will promote plant growth and intensify colours.
