Aloes – Water Wise Plant of the month – May

Aloes are indigenous succulent type plants found growing on the hillsides throughout the country.

Originally considered pretty boring and dull, aloes are now in the spotlight as a stylish, unique and beneficial water wise garden (& indoor) specimen.

Aloes require minimal to no care all year round… But their splendour is revealed during Autumn, when they flower. The blooms are typically dark red or orange, with new yellow and paler varieties being released each year.

Aloes can be planted into any sunny location outdoors. They need good drainage and should be watered until established. Thereafter – let nature take it’s course!

An added feature and huge benefit of aloes is the sweet nectar producing blooms. These make them popular with birds and butterflies, both of whom particularly appreciate the extra nutrition at this time of year.

If you don’t have an aloe in your garden – now is the ideal time to get one!

Basic growing guidelines:

Plant in well drained soil in a full sun location. Make sure to plant at the same planting depth as the plant bag in which the aloe was purchased. Do not add fertilizer into the planting hole, rather sprinkle around the base after planting.

Indoor usage:

Aloes are currently trending indoors. Smaller compact varieties are popular make popular indoor plants but must be positioned in a well lit or sunny area. For a more modern look – wash the soil off the roots, trim roots and place the succulent leaves into a display vase. Spray with water once every 2 weeks and enjoy!
