Vriesea splendens – Indoor Plant of the month, May

A funky, modern indoor plant that says ‘WOW’!

Vriesea splendens (Flaming Sword) is ideal for novice gardeners – as a member of the bromeliad family, these plants are epiphytic in nature meaning they are air plants and super-easy to care for.

‘Flaming Sword’ is a stylish, unique and a-typical indoor plant. The spikey foliage is unusually attractive, but it’s the flat, colourful, swordlike bloom that the plant is most highly prized for. Bromeliad blooms last for 3 – 6 months, making them among the longest flowering plants. However, they only flower once in their lifetime, producing off-cut’s that will continue the growing life cycle.

Basic growing guidelines:

Caring for Flaming Sword is simple; position in a well-lit location out of direct light. Bromeliads are tropical plants with a ‘rosette cup’ at the base of the leaves which should always be filled with water. Take care not to let the water stagnate – a weekly top-up allows the ‘old’ water to be displaced into the soil which is exactly what the plant needs to thrive.

Bromeliads require no pest and disease control. A monthly addition of liquid fertilizer to the water will promote plant growth and intensify colours.
