Primula malacoides (fairy primroses) are an annual highlight in the autumn garden.
These delicate looking plants are actually pretty tough! They are recogniseable by the small, soft flower whorls that extend above the foliage. Flower colours range from white, through shades of pink to purple and a deep rose.
Fairy primroses are frost hardy and tolerate extremely cold temperatures, flowering throughout the gloom of the winter. Primula’s can be planted between March and July, flowering till early spring when the heat sets in. They are self seeding too, so don’t be surprised if baby plants start germinating a year down the line.
Primula’s can be planted in both full sun and semi shaded locations. They add excellent colour to dark, shaded areas and are ideal for use under large trees. Primula’s can be planted in mass and are also excellent in mixed plantings, in flower beds, borders, rockeries and in containers. They are extremely versatile and super easy to grow!
Basic growing guidelines:
Plant in compost rich soil in full sun or partially shaded areas. Water ± 2 – 3 times a week. Plants in full sun locations will require more regular watering than those in the shade. Check the soil to gauge the frequency required. Good drainage is important.
Primula’s are largely disease free and require little extra attention. Flowering is enhanced with a weekly application of foliar feed (ie. Multifeed, Seagrow)
Indoor usage:
Primula malacoides is most commonly grown outdoors. They can be used indoors for 3 – 4 weeks after which they should be repositioned on a bright patio or outside
‘Sister plants’ Primula obconica & Primula acaulis are recommended for indoor use
