Arbour day takes place annually in many countries around the world.  On this day individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees.  Trees are placed in the spotlight, their importance is recognised and as a result Arbour Day has extended to Arbour Month which further  extends to a greater awareness of the environment.

South Africa has a wealth of over 2000 indigenous trees!

To help increase awareness, 2 indigenous trees are promoted annually, one common and one rare species. The 2016 South African Trees of the Year are:

Ficus thonningii – Common Wild Fig (common)

Maerua cafra – Common Bush-cherry (rare)
