Lavender plants are undoubtedly one of the most popular and most sought after flowering herbs. Their medicinal properties are well documented and commonly associated with calming, soothing effects. Lavender is highly perfumed and the fragrance has been bottled in many commercial perfumes.
As a plant, lavenders are easy-to-grow. They are hardy, low maintenance perennials with fragrant foliage and purple flower spikes. Lavender has low water requirements and are ideally suited to large landscape plantings as well as container plantings. They need full sun to flower and thrive, where they attract insects, butterflies and birds to the garden.
There are many lavender varieties – availability varies throughout the year and will be advised accordingly.
Position in a full sun location – ideal on sunny windowsills, outdoors and on patios.
Do not allow the soil to dry out. Water 2 – 3 times a week (requirements vary according to season & location).
Established lavender plants grown in the garden can be pruned back, severely at the end of winter. After a couple of years, it is advisable to remove the plants as they have a tendency to become woody. Feeding is recommended during the growing season (Spring thro till Autumn) and will promote and extend the flowering season.
